Dr. Mary Banwart is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Development, Mentoring, and Growth at the University of Kansas. She also directs the Women’s Global Leadership Consortium, previously leading the KU Institute for Leadership Studies. Her research focuses on political communication, gender dynamics in campaigns, and leadership development’s impact on civic engagement. With over $14 million in grant funding, she has pioneered initiatives to elevate women’s roles in civic spaces.
Education: Ph.D. in Rhetoric & Political Communication from the University of Oklahoma. She teaches courses in political communication and leadership, bridging theoretical insights with practical applications in campaign strategies and institutional leadership.
Research highlights include analyzing gendered messaging in political ads, the influence of leadership programs on organizational efficacy, and the enduring effects of sexism in post-2016/2020 elections. Her work emphasizes empowering marginalized voices and advancing gender equity through communication and policy.
Advising and Grants: Over $14 million in grants have supported her initiatives, including the Women’s Global Leadership Consortium. Her leadership roles span academic administration and nonprofit sectors, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
Labs/Teams: Co-directs the Women’s Global Leadership Consortium and collaborates with the KU Institute for Leadership Studies to develop evidence-based leadership frameworks.
