Mary Baker is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology and affiliated with the Environmental Studies Program at Rhode Island College. She is based in Gaige Hall and can be reached at mbaker@ric.edu or (401) 456-8112.

Dr. Baker's research centers on the cognitive and ecological adaptations of nonhuman primates. She has conducted a longitudinal field study on white-faced capuchin monkeys (Cebus capucinus) in Costa Rica since 1991, focusing on medicinal plant use, foraging strategies, and social behavior. Her early work involved behavioral studies of vervet monkeys at UCLA. She is increasingly interested in science communication and community engagement.
Her teaching portfolio includes core and advanced courses such as Introduction to Biological Anthropology, Primate Ecology and Social Behavior, Human Paleontology, and the Evolution of the Capacity for Culture, reflecting her deep integration of research and pedagogy in biological anthropology.
Dr. Baker advises students through senior research experiences and offers courses that fulfill core curriculum requirements, emphasizing inquiry and interdisciplinary learning.
She is actively involved in field research and educational outreach, promoting public understanding of primate behavior and evolutionary science.
