Dr. Mary Alt is a Professor and Department Head of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona. She directs the L4 Lab, focusing on word learning, concept learning, and bilingualism. Her research integrates experimental and clinical approaches to understand how children acquire language and concepts, with a particular emphasis on bilingual populations and children with developmental language disorders. Dr. Alt holds certifications from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and is a licensed speech-language pathologist in Arizona. She teaches courses such as SLHS 399/499/599 (Independent Study) and SLHS 555 (Developmental Language Disorders).
Her research highlights the interplay between working memory, language acquisition, and learning disabilities. She has published extensively on topics including vocabulary interventions for late talkers, phonological processing in dyslexia, and the application of technology in global health initiatives. Dr. Alt’s work bridges experimental research and clinical practice, with a focus on evidence-based treatments and telehealth models.
Dr. Alt received the prestigious Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2021.
