Marwan Simaan is the Florida 21st Century Chair and Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Central Florida. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1972). His research focuses on optimization and control, signal processing, and knowledge-based systems with applications in smart grids and distributed generation. He leads projects such as the FEEDER Center (DoE) and self-organizing control for high-penetration smart grids (NSF).
- Education: Ph.D., Electrical Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1972.
His research interests emphasize scalable game-theoretical dispatch in smart grids and advanced control methodologies. Current projects address energy distribution challenges in modern grids through innovative control frameworks. His work bridges theoretical control systems with practical energy infrastructure solutions.
Dr. Simaan holds numerous accolades, including membership in the National Academy of Engineering and fellowships from IEEE, NAI, ASEE, AAAS, and AIMBE. He has received distinguished alumni and service awards from the University of Illinois and the IEEE Sayle Award for educational contributions.
- Grants/Projects:
- Self-organizing Control and Scalable Game-theoretical Dispatch of Distributed Generations (NSF)
- FEEDER Center (DoE)
- 21st Century World Class Scholars Program (Florida Board of Governors)
He serves on editorial boards for IEEE Access, IEEE Systems Journal, and Integrated Computer-Aided Engineering. His professional activities include leadership roles in AAAS engineering committees and fellow selection processes.
