Marvin Marshak is a Professor in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. His office is located in the Physics and Nanotechnology Building at 330 Physics And Nanotechnology Building, 115 Union St. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455. He can be reached at marshak@umn.edu or by phone at 612-624-1312.
Professor Marshak's research focuses on experimental particle physics, particularly the study of fundamental forces in nature with an emphasis on neutrino properties. He collaborates in experiments to determine the characteristics of elementary particles, studying neutrinos and high-energy cosmic rays to understand their nature, origin, and implications for fundamental physics. His work contributes to several major international collaborations including MINOS+, NOvA, DUNE, and the CHIPs Collaboration. A long-term interest of his research is investigating non-thermal stars as potential sources of cosmic radiation.
His recent publication activity shows a strong focus on neutrino oscillation experiments, particularly through the NOvA and DUNE collaborations. His work spans experimental design, data analysis techniques, and detector technology development. The research trends indicate a continued commitment to advancing our understanding of neutrino properties and their role in fundamental physics, with implications for physics beyond the Standard Model.
Professor Marshak has been actively involved in numerous research projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. His current projects include Facility Operations for the NOvA Far Detector Laboratory, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), and Experimental Research at the Intensity Frontier in High Energy Physics. He has served as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on multiple grants, demonstrating leadership in large-scale experimental physics projects.
He teaches introductory physics courses with an emphasis on calculus-based classes primarily intended for students with interests in science, engineering and mathematics. His research groups include members of the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS+), NuMI Off-axis ve Appearance (NOvA), Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), and CHIPs Collaboration teams.
