Martyn Kurr is a Senior Lecturer in Marine Biology/Ecology at the School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University. He previously taught at Newcastle University and has held roles such as the marine lead for internationalization. Since 2020, he has been actively teaching at Bangor, serving as the Foundation Year Lead, Director of Marketing and Recruitment, and Admissions Tutor for Marine Biology. He organizes eight modules across foundation to master’s levels.
He holds a PhD from Bangor University (2015) on macroalgal chemical defenses and a master’s degree in marine biology (2006–2010). His research focuses on invasive species, macroalgae, seagrass ecosystems, microbial interactions, and microplastics. He leads three PhD projects, supervises a Master’s by Research, and collaborates on additional student projects.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in education and environmental sustainability. Notable awards include the 2014 Irene Manton Prize and the 2018 Newcastle Teaching Award. He is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2024).
Recent activities include organizing the North Wales Marine Conservation Conference and participating in projects like the Envision PhD studentship on seagrass microplastic capture. He actively engages in academic outreach and serves on professional committees.
