Martyn J Powell is Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences at the University of Bristol. His research centers on 18th-19th century political, social, and cultural history, with geographical emphasis on Ireland, Britain, and America. He investigates the development of civil society through press networks, clubs, and associational culture.
