Marty Guterman was a Professor of Mathematics at Tufts University, serving from 1966 to his death in 2004. He held roles as Instructor (1966), Assistant Professor (1968), Associate Professor (1972), and full Professor (1987). His research focused on group theory, contributing to the classification of finite simple groups, a landmark 20th-century mathematical project. He co-authored a textbook on differential equations with Zbigniew Nitecki, emphasizing interdisciplinary applications.
Guterman pioneered courses like Discrete Mathematics, Number Theory, and the graduate Algebra sequence. He is celebrated for creating the undergraduate course 'Symmetry,' using M.C. Escher’s art to teach group theory to non-technical students. His 'Mathematics of Social Choice' remains a cornerstone for humanities students fulfilling math requirements.
Active in university governance, Guterman served as Mathematics Department liaison to the Education Department and contributed to committee work. Posthumously honored via the Guterman Award, Guterman Lectures, and the Martin Guterman Library (a math book collection in Bromfield-Pearson Hall). A scholarship at the New England Conservatory also bears his name, reflecting his passion for chamber music.
Personal life highlights include his wife Sonia, a biochemist and intellectual property lawyer, and daughters Lila (science writer) and Beth (concert violist). Guterman passed away in 2004, leaving a legacy of teaching innovation and collaborative scholarship.
