Dr Martina Zimmermann is a Reader in Health Humanities and Health Sciences at King's College London's Department of English within the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. She holds a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship (2020–2025) and an honorary Associate Professor position at Goethe University Frankfurt's Department of Pharmacology. Her research bridges neuropharmacology and literature studies, focusing on aging, dementia narratives, and science communication. Key affiliations include the Centre for the Humanities and Health, Centre for Technology and the Body, and Ageing Research at King's (ARK).
Education: PhD in Neuropharmacology (Goethe University Frankfurt), Habilitation in Pharmacology, and a second Wellcome Trust-funded PhD in Health Humanities (King’s College London). She teaches interdisciplinary modules on science communication and rhetoric of science, though currently focused full-time on her fellowship.
Research interests center on how cultural narratives shape scientific paradigms around aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Her flagship project, SAACY (Sciences of Ageing and Culture of Youth), examines societal perceptions of aging through policy and cultural lenses. She collaborates with organizations like Age UK, Centre for Ageing Better, and the Pam Britton Trust for Dementia.
Publications include two monographs on dementia narratives and over 25 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Medical Humanities and Neuropharmacology. Awards include Wellcome Trust open-access funding and recognition for interdisciplinary teaching.
