Martina Zanella is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), affiliated with the Trinity Impact Evaluation Unit (TIME) and the Trinity Research in Social Sciences (TRISS). She holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics (LSE), awarded in March 2022.
Her research focuses on inequality in education, labor markets, and political institutions, integrating insights from Psychology and Sociology to inform policy. Key areas include gender representation in male-dominated fields, the impact of gender quotas in politics, and the dynamics of workplace segregation.
In her recent work, Zanella examines how stereotypes influence educational choices and performance, the evolving responses of political parties to gender quotas in South Korea, and the strategic use of confidence by female academics in peer review contexts. Her methodologies combine large-scale empirical analysis with institutional data, such as university enrollment records and municipal council transcripts.

Her research has been supported by grants from STICERD, the French National Research Agency, the Nuffield Foundation, and TCD's Arts and Social Sciences Benefactions Fund. She also collaborates with institutions like a global consumer goods firm on reskilling programs addressing automation challenges.
Zanella is actively involved in interdisciplinary research teams at TIME and TRISS, which focus on policy evaluation and social science innovation.
