Martina Saltamacchia is a Distinguished Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Nebraska Omaha. She serves as Director of the Medieval and Renaissance Studies program and Graduate Program Chair. Her expertise lies in Medieval Italian History, focusing on economic, social, and religious dynamics. She holds dual Ph.D.s in Medieval History from Rutgers University (2013) and Economics and Social History from Bocconi University (2011), along with a Laurea in Economics from Bocconi (2004).
Her research challenges traditional narratives about medieval cathedral construction, demonstrating the critical role of public contributions in funding Milan’s cathedral. Key publications include Costruire Cattedrali (2011) and "The Prince and the Prostitute" (2011). She has received prestigious awards including NEH and Mellon grants, and teaches courses like Medieval Merchants and Castles and Cathedrals.
As a leader in interdisciplinary medieval studies, Dr. Saltamacchia’s work bridges economic history and cultural analysis, emphasizing grassroots contributions to monumental projects.
