Martina Lopez is a Professor of Studio Art and Area Head of Photography at the University of Notre Dame. She holds a BFA from the University of Washington, Seattle, and an MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work bridges 19th-century photographic techniques with digital innovation, focusing on themes of memory, mortality, and the human condition. Lopez’s art has been exhibited globally at institutions including the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the Seoul Museum of Art, with works included in major collections like the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Her research interests center on the malleability of digital media and the interplay between historical portraiture and contemporary identity. Notable projects include A Place Away (2019-2021), exploring aging and memory through manipulated 19th-century portraits, and Mourning of Memory (2007-2008), which merges vintage photographs with landscapes to examine temporal passage. Lopez has received prestigious awards such as the National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Photography Fellowship and Illinois Arts Council Fellowships.
Her pedagogical contributions span over three decades, teaching photography and digital art while maintaining a prolific creative practice. Lopez’s installations often incorporate encaustic techniques and ambrotypes, emphasizing materiality and viewer interaction. Her work interrogates the fragile boundary between reality and memory, challenging audiences to confront existential questions through visual storytelling.
