Prof. Dr. Martin Zillinger is a faculty member at the Department of Anthropology, University of Cologne. He is affiliated with the Global South Studies Center Cologne (GSSC), the Collaborative Research Centers SFB 1187 "Media of Cooperation" and SFB 228 "Future Rural Africa," and serves as a mentor at the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne. His academic work spans interdisciplinary themes connecting media, religion, migration, and globalization.
- Research Focus: Anthropology of blessing, media ethnography, decolonizing ethnographic collections, digital publics in Morocco, testing futures in Western Kenya, trance mediumship, and the history of the Durkheim School.
- Current Projects: SFB 1187 B04 "Digital Publics and Social Transformation in the Maghreb," SFB/TR 228 C06 "Testing Future" (ended December 2021), and the a.r.t.e.s. Mauss-Werkstatt initiative.
Prof. Zillinger actively supervises PhD students and participates in academic events, including the Cologne-Siegen Masterclass for Media Ethnography and the Cologne Crossroads Conversations lecture series. His work emphasizes collaborative research, multimodal ethnography, and critical debates on restitution and post-migrant societies.
