Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Martin Weber is a Senior Professor at the School of Management, University of Mannheim, where he has been serving since 2017. Previously, he held the Chair of Finance and Banking at the same institution from 1993 to 2017. His academic career also includes professorships at the University of Kiel (1989-1993) and the University of Cologne (1988-1989).
Born in 1952, Weber studied mathematics and business administration, earning both his Ph.D. and habilitation in business administration from the University of Aachen. He has held numerous visiting positions at prestigious institutions including Duke University (5 months at Fuqua School of Business), Stanford University (6 months in Psychology Department), University of Pennsylvania (4 months at Wharton School), and UCLA (various visits totaling 18 months).
Professor Weber's research focuses on the psychological foundations of financial decision-making:
- Behavioral Finance - examining how cognitive biases affect investment decisions
- Household Finance - studying how individuals and families make financial choices
- Experimental Economics - using controlled experiments to understand economic behavior
- Decision Theory - developing models of rational and irrational decision processes
His major recognitions include:
- Honorary Doctoral Degree from the University of Muenster (2007)
- Membership in The German National Academy of Science Leopoldina (since 2002)
- Membership in The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (since 2002)
- Research fellowship at CEPR, London (since 2002)
Administratively, Weber served as Dean of the Faculty for Business Administration (2004-2006) and as Director (1997-2002) and Deputy Director (2003-2008) of the Sonderforschungsbereich 504 of the German National Science Foundation. He serves on editorial boards of numerous journals and has co-authored textbooks on decision analysis and banking. His research group continues to explore psychological aspects of financial decision-making with applications to market behavior and investment strategies.
