Martin Varga

Martin Varga is a Senior Lecturer and Privatdozent at the University Clinic for Surgery, Medical University of Salzburg. His research focuses on hepatobiliary oncology, particularly cholangiocarcinoma and bile duct cancers, with an emphasis on molecular mechanisms involving peptides like Galanin and miRNA biomarkers. He has led projects investigating predictive biomarkers for esophageal adenocarcinoma and the role of Galanin in cholangiocarcinoma. Dr. Varga has authored over 39 publications since 2008, including studies on surgical outcomes for pancreatic resections and rare bile duct pathologies. He organized the STAR Course - Hepatobiliäre Chirurgie für die tägliche Praxis in 2024.

His academic contributions span clinical research, molecular diagnostics, and surgical innovation. Recent work highlights include the 2025 PEPTIDES publication on Spexin expression in bile duct tumors and collaborative studies on pancreatectomy outcomes.
