Martin Van Ittersum is a Professor at Wageningen University and Research, specializing in agricultural and environmental science. He holds a PhD from WUR (1992) and focuses on research methodologies for integrated assessment of agricultural systems at multiple scales. His work spans field-to-farm analyses, regional studies, and global-level evaluations.
He has led major international projects, including the EU-funded SEAMLESS project (2005-2009), coordinating 30 universities and 150 researchers to develop environmental and agricultural modeling systems. Currently, he co-leads the Global Yield Gap Atlas project, supported by the Gates Foundation, addressing food availability and sustainability.
Van Ittersum serves on multiple editorial boards and was co-editor-in-chief of Agricultural Systems. In 2013, he co-chaired the First International Conference on Global Food Security. His research emphasizes circularity in food systems, phosphorus scarcity, and climate resilience.
During 2018, he participated in the COHORTE Pilot Group fellowship at Wageningen, exploring the optimal scale (local vs. global) for organizing food system circularity through the SYSTEM research unit.
