Martin Ulirsch is a Professor for Algebra and Discrete Mathematics at Paderborn University and a Principal Investigator at the SFB 326: GAUS. His research is supported by DFG grants, including projects on tropical curves and combinatorial synergies. Previously, he was a Research Group Leader and Junior Professor at Goethe University Frankfurt (2018–2025), a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the University of Warwick (2018–2019), and held postdoctoral positions at the University of Michigan, the Fields Institute, and the University of Bonn.
Education: PhD from Brown University (2014), advised by Dan Abramovich; undergraduate studies at the University of Regensburg (2009–2013), with a minor in Physics and a visiting year at Brandeis University.
Research focuses on algebraic/arithmetic geometry, tropical geometry, logarithmic/non-Archimedean geometry, matroids, buildings, and combinatorial algebraic geometry. He explores connections to moduli spaces and applies complex analytic methods to non-Archimedean structures.
Organized workshops including 'Tropical Geometry in Zoom (TGiZ)', 'Combinatorial Synergies', and conferences on logarithmic geometry and moduli spaces. Active in mentoring: current PhD students include Arne Kuhrs and Pedro Souza; former advisees now at institutions like the University of Glasgow and Warwick.
- Grants: DFG grants 456557832 and 539867663.
- Awards: Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship (2018–2019).
- Labs/Teams: Co-organizer of TGiZ seminar and GAUS research initiatives.
