Martin St. Maurice serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Marquette University, where he maintains an active research laboratory and teaches undergraduate biochemistry courses. His institutional affiliation includes the Wehr Life Sciences building in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with contact via martin.stmaurice@marquette.edu.
Academic credentials:
- B.Sc., University of Guelph, Canada
- Ph.D., Dalhousie University, Canada
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Wisconsin–Madison
His research program investigates structural mechanisms of biotin-dependent carboxylases using integrated approaches of protein engineering, kinetic analyses, and X-ray crystallography. Current work focuses on pyruvate carboxylase's allosteric regulation by acetyl-CoA and its implications for metabolic disorders. This research bridges fundamental enzymology with therapeutic applications for obesity and type-2 diabetes.
Recent publications (2018-2022) demonstrate consistent emphasis on conformational dynamics and regulatory mechanisms in biotin-dependent enzymes. The collective work reveals recurring themes in structural enzymology, particularly regarding carrier domain positioning and allosteric communication in metabolic enzymes.
Dr. St. Maurice has mentored eight Ph.D. students to completion or candidacy, including current advisees Nicholas Schneider and Nneamaka Uba. Former students (Amanda Laseke, Josh Hakala, Brittney Wyatt, Yumeng Liu, Adam Lietzan, Yi Lin) have graduated between 2014-2023. He actively recruits new doctoral candidates while managing departmental leadership responsibilities.
The laboratory functions as a multidisciplinary research unit combining structural biology and biochemical methodologies to address fundamental questions in enzyme catalysis, with ongoing projects exploring therapeutic targeting of metabolic enzymes.
