Professor Martin Sillence is an academic leader in Biological and Environmental Sciences at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), serving as Academic Lead (Research) and previously Academic Program Director (Science). He holds a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Leeds and a Graduate Certificate in University Leadership and Management from Charles Sturt University. His career spans over 38 years in research and academia, with expertise in animal physiology, pharmacology, and equine health, particularly endocrinology and metabolic disorders.
Research interests include equine laminitis, insulin dysregulation, and the application of advanced analytical techniques like SERS (Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy). He has published over 100 papers, secured $12M+ in grants, and holds patents related to livestock vaccines. Awards include the Vice Chancellor’s Team Award (2013) and a Literary Prize from the Journal of Veterinary Science (2004).
Teaching focuses on pharmacology, animal biology, and food security. Leadership roles include Assistant Dean (Research), Discipline Leader, and membership in the Australian Government’s Gene Technology Scheme Implementation Expert Reference Panel. Current projects address laminitis treatment, equine metabolic syndrome, and vaccine development for livestock efficiency.
