Martin Schmalz is a Professor of Finance, Economics, and Real Estate at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. He serves as Director of the Oxford Future of Real Estate Initiative (FoRE) and Chief Economist at the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB). His roles also include Director of the Global Corporate Governance Colloquia, Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and CESifo, and Research Member of the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI).
He holds a PhD in Economics from Princeton University (2012) and a Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering from Universität Stuttgart (2007). Prior academic positions include Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business and NBD Bancorp Assistant Professor.
Schmalz’s research focuses on common ownership’s competitive implications, corporate governance, behavioral finance, and real estate. He explores how shared shareholder interests among competitors influence pricing, innovation, and market structures, with policy impacts on antitrust enforcement. His work also addresses central bank profitability, delegated voting in climate change, and the interplay between macroeconomic environments and corporate decisions.
Awarded the Brattle Group Distinguished Paper Prize (2017) and Jerry S Cohen Memorial Fund Writing Awards (2019, 2023), his research has influenced global regulators through presentations to the US Department of Justice, European Commission, and others. He advises UHNWIs, family offices, and competition authorities, blending academic rigor with practical insights.
Schmalz teaches AI applications in finance, real estate strategy, and valuation across MBA and executive programs. His pedagogical style emphasizes Socratic dialogue and case-based learning, earning teaching excellence awards. He supervises doctoral students like Wenchuan Zhao and collaborates with industry partners via initiatives such as the Oxford Real Estate Society and annual conferences.
His interdisciplinary work spans finance, economics, and policy, supported by the Lalji Family Real Estate Fund. Schmalz advocates for embedding real estate into academic curricula and research to address societal challenges like housing and climate resilience.
