Martin Richardson

Dr. Martin Richardson is the Pegasus Professor and Northrop Grumman Professor of X-ray Photonics at the University of Central Florida (UCF), affiliated with the College of Optics & Photonics and the Department of Physics. He leads the Laser & Plasma Laboratory (LPL) and founded the Townes Laser Institute, a State Center of Excellence. His career spans over five decades, with contributions to laser development, plasma physics, and high-intensity laser applications. Richardson holds a PhD from London University and has held visiting positions at institutions worldwide, including the Lebedev Institute and Max Planck Institute.

Education: BSc (Physics) and PhD (Photon Physics) from Imperial College London and University of London, respectively. His research focuses on ultrafast lasers, laser-plasma interactions, EUV/X-ray technologies, and atmospheric laser propagation. He pioneered laser fusion studies in Canada and has over 400 publications, 20+ patents, and international collaborative programs like the Atlantis MS program.

Research interests include laser-material interactions, filamentation dynamics, and high-power laser systems. Notable achievements: Schardin Medal recipient (2019), Fellow of OSA, and National Academy of Inventors Fellow. He advises students in physics and optics, overseeing PhD candidates like Joshua Bryan and Justin Cook.
