Martin Mills is Professor and Chair in Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen, where he directs the Scottish Centre for Himalayan Research. He specializes in comparative governance structures across religious, state, and medical institutions, with extensive fieldwork in Tibet, Ladakh, China, Northern India and Scotland spanning thirty years.
His research bridges three specializations: anthropological theories of personhood, ethnography of Tibetan communities, and climate change impacts on Himalayan regions. He maintains policy collaborations with the Scottish Parliament and international research organizations.
Key publications explore Tibetan constitutional history, Buddhist law, ritual economies, and climate change impacts. His work combines anthropological theory with indigenous textual scholarship to examine ceremonial statecraft, religious governance, and environmental challenges.
Honors include fellowship in the Royal Anthropological Institute and membership in several international scholarly associations focused on Tibetan and Himalayan studies.
