Martin Marchman Andersen is an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, and active within the Center for Philosophy and Ethics of Health. His transdisciplinary work bridges philosophy with public health, collaborating with physicians, biologists, economists, and engineers to address ethical and conceptual challenges in health policy and practice.
- Ph.D. in Health, personal responsibility, and distributive justice from University of Copenhagen (2013)
His research centers on stigma (particularly weight and mental illness stigma), sustainability conceptualization/quantification, and healthcare priority settings. Through philosophical analysis, he examines how stigma manifests in clinical interventions and public health policies, while critically evaluating environmental sustainability frameworks for public health systems. His work consistently challenges assumptions about personal responsibility in health and explores ethical implications of resource allocation.
Analysis of his 2022-2025 publications reveals three dominant trends: (1) Deepening theoretical work on stigma definitions and manifestations, especially regarding weight and mental health; (2) Critical examination of sustainability metrics in public health with growing focus on planetary boundaries; (3) Ethical analysis of priority-setting frameworks that increasingly incorporates environmental considerations. His research maintains strong transdisciplinary connections between philosophy, epidemiology, and clinical practice.
Andersen serves as principal supervisor for PhD candidate S. Wagner on the T2D Stigma project (2024-2027) investigating weight-related stigma in diabetes care. He leads the Research Council-funded project "Understanding stigma: Concept and measurement" (2025-2028) developing new stigma assessment tools. His institutional roles include teaching scientific theory, responsible conduct of research, and evidence-based health policy courses since 2020.
He actively engages with public discourse through media contributions on maternity legislation, longevity ethics, and climate-health tradeoffs, demonstrating commitment to translating academic work into societal debate. His institutional base within the National Institute of Public Health provides infrastructure for collaborative research across Denmark's healthcare system.
