Martin M Berz is a Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU), specializing in accelerator physics, beam dynamics, and computational methods. He earned his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in 1986 from the University of Giessen and has held academic roles since 1990 at MSU. His work includes leadership in the development of the COSY INFINITY simulation framework and contributions to precision experiments like the Muon g-2 and proton EDM projects at Fermilab.
- Doctor Honoris Causa in Mathematics, Saint Petersburg State University, 2007
- R. E. Moore Prize for Interval Analysis, 2008
- Fellow of the American Physical Society, 1998
- Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Faculty Research Fellow, 1992
His research focuses on nonlinear beam physics, electric dipole moment searches, muon g-2 precision measurements, and differential algebra-based computational methods. Recent work addresses systematic errors in storage rings, spin dynamics modeling, and interferometry for phase/amplitude determination. Publications emphasize high-order transfer maps, fringe field computations, and hybrid simulation techniques for accelerators.
Berz has led instructional efforts in graduate electromagnetism (PHY842), beam physics curriculum development, and courses at the US Particle Accelerator School, CERN, and the German National Merit Foundation. He developed MSU's Virtual University Beam Physics (VUBeam) program and authored over 160 refereed papers and 8 books.
