Prof. Martin Knight is a Professor of Mechanobiology and Dean for Research at Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds appointments at the School of Engineering and Materials Science and leads the Queen Mary & Emulate Organs-on-chips Centre. His work focuses on organ-on-a-chip technology and primary cilia biology, with applications in cartilage, bone, and cancer research. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority (FHEA) and has secured over £18M in research funding.
Education: BEng (Mechanical Engineering, University of Bath), MSc (Biomedical Engineering, University of Surrey), PhD (Queen Mary University of London).
Research Interests: Organ-on-a-chip models for disease prediction, mechanobiology of primary cilia in health and disease, and translation of bioengineering innovations. Key projects include EPSRC-funded organ-on-chip CDTs and polycystic kidney disease modeling.
Recent Trends in Articles: Prof. Knight's publications emphasize organ-on-chip technology integration with biomechanical cues, cilia-mediated signaling in cancer and inflammation, and environmental health impacts on bone health. His work bridges fundamental biology with clinical applications, leveraging microfluidics and in vitro models.
Awards: EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship (2000), FHEA (2022).
Grants & Labs: Leads the £7M EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Organ-on-a-Chip Technology. Oversees the Centre for Predictive in vitro Models and collaborates with Emulate Inc. His labs develop cutting-edge models for musculoskeletal, kidney, and cancer research.
Public Engagement: Chair of the UK Biomedical Engineering Association and active in science communication. Promotes bioengineering outreach via documentaries, festivals, and school programs.
Work-Life Balance: Works part-time (80%) to prioritize family and volunteer activities with the Woodland Trust, river surveys, and ceramics.
