Martin Karl Wilhelm Pohl is a Leading Scientist at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) and Full Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Potsdam since 2009. His work spans both institutions, with his primary research base at DESY Zeuthen and his academic appointment at the University of Potsdam's Institute of Physics and Astronomy.
Professor Pohl's academic journey began with a PhD from the University of Bonn in 1991. He held research positions at prestigious institutions including the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, and the Danish Space Research Institute. After completing his habilitation in Theoretical Physics at Ruhr University of Bochum in 2002, he served as Assistant and Associate Professor at Iowa State University before returning to Germany in 2009.
His research focuses on astroparticle physics, particularly the study of energetic particles in the universe. Key scientific questions driving his work include: How do cosmic sources accelerate particles to very high energies? How do supermassive black holes form jets and energetic particles therein? What is the nature of dark matter in the universe? His group conducts kinetic modeling of space plasma with energetic particles and participates in major observational projects including VERITAS and the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA).
Pohl's research encompasses several critical areas in modern astrophysics:
- Cosmic ray acceleration mechanisms at shock fronts of supernova remnants
- Propagation of high-energy particles through the Galaxy
- Anomalies in cosmic particle spectra that may indicate dark matter signatures
- Very-high-energy gamma ray astronomy
As an educator, Professor Pohl teaches astroparticle physics courses at the University of Potsdam and maintains active research collaborations. His group provides valuable public resources including gamma-ray production matrices, lepton production matrices, and 3D models of the molecular-gas distribution in the Galaxy. He is also involved with the International Helmholtz-Weizmann Research School on Multimessenger Astronomy, which connects DESY with the University of Potsdam and other international partners to advance research in this emerging field.
