Prof. Martin Jörg Schäfer is a Professor of Modern German Literature and Theatre Studies at the University of Hamburg's Faculty of Humanities, affiliated with the Department of Language, Literature, Media I and the Institute of German Studies. He leads the Equal Opportunity and Diversity initiatives at the university and is a core member of the Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts' (UWA). His research focuses on theatre practices from the 18th century to contemporary performance, emphasizing manuscript cultures, theatrical materiality, and the interplay between text and performance. Notable projects include studies on Leopold Jessner's prompt books and censorship in Hamburg's theatrical archives.
His work bridges historical analysis with theoretical inquiries into aesthetics, mediality, and political fictions. Recent projects explore the material dynamics of prompt books, the cultural significance of theatrical adaptations, and the role of manuscripts in shaping performance traditions. Schäfer also engages with contemporary debates on digital-age aesthetics and participatory performance through events like the DachSalon discussions at SchauSpielHaus.
As a leader in equal opportunity initiatives and a scholar in the DFG Cluster UWA, Schäfer contributes to interdisciplinary research on written artefacts, fostering collaboration between humanities and cultural heritage studies. His research outputs span monographs, edited volumes, and journal articles, reflecting his commitment to advancing theatre historiography and manuscript studies.
