Martin Johnes is Professor of Modern History at Swansea University's School of Culture and Communication within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research specializes in Welsh history and popular culture in modern Britain, with a focus on identity through the lenses of politics, sport, masculinity, race, national identity, pop music, disasters, and local government.
Johnes' research explores how identity is constructed through diverse contexts. Key areas include:
- Sport as cultural practice: Football's significance in Wales and race in British boxing
- Welsh historical analysis: Political responses to the Aberfan disaster and post-1939 societal developments
- Cultural phenomena: Evolution of Christmas in the UK and language politics in education
