Martin Illingworth is a Senior Lecturer in Education and Course Leader for the Secondary PGCE English program at Sheffield Hallam University's Department of Teacher Education, within the College of Social Sciences and Arts. With 24 years of teaching experience, he specializes in teacher training, curriculum development, and educational policy. He has conducted research in Toronto, Canada, comparing UK and Canadian teacher training systems, publishing findings in his 2011 book and The Canadian Journal for Education.
His work emphasizes pedagogical reflection and innovative teaching strategies, as seen in books like Think Before You Teach (2015) and Forget School (2020), which address educator responsibility and digital-age education challenges. He collaborates with institutions like the University of Nottingham, King’s College London, and organizations such as NATE (National Association for the Teaching of English). He delivers national training on literacy, A-level approaches, and school improvement, having supported Special Measures schools and internationally educated teachers.
Illingworth’s activities include organizing Gifted and Talented programs, American Studies Days, and battlefield educational trips. His upcoming book Confidence explores teacher and student resilience in uncertain times.
