Prof. Martin Herbert Schroth is a Professor of Subsurface Biogeochemistry at ETH Zurich's Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS). He leads research in greenhouse-gas (GHG) turnover, microbial methane oxidation, and novel methods for quantifying environmental processes. His work spans terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including aquifers, peat bogs, and glacier forefields. He holds a Ph.D. from Oregon State University (1996) and has held roles at ETH Zurich since 1999. His teaching includes laboratory courses and term paper supervision.
Key research focuses include GHG dynamics, microbial community analysis, and interdisciplinary methodologies combining hydrology, isotopes, and molecular tools. Awards include ETH's Excellence in Teaching recognition and international journal accolades. He has supervised 14 PhD students and 6 postdocs, with ongoing projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and European initiatives.
Prof. Schroth chairs the Rooms Commission in D-USYS and reviews for journals like Environmental Science & Technology. He is affiliated with the American Geophysical Union and European Geosciences Union.
