Martin Gunnarson is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at Södertörn University, directing the Centre for Studies in Practical Knowledge. He holds a PhD in Ethnology from Lund University (2016) and specializes in medical humanities, focusing on cultural and philosophical perspectives of medicine, illness, embodiment, technology, and labor. His research integrates empirical studies with phenomenological methods.
His doctoral thesis, Please Be Patient: A Cultural Phenomenological Study of Haemodialysis and Kidney Transplantation Care, examined medical practices for kidney failure patients through observations and interviews in Sweden and Latvia. He contributed to multidisciplinary projects like The Body as Gift (Baltic Sea Foundation) and HOTT-Project (EU-funded), addressing organ trafficking and transplantation ethics.
At Södertörn University, he teaches courses in the Master Programme in Practical Knowledge, Preschool Teacher Programme, and Police Education. Currently, he is not engaged in active research projects, but his work is archived in DiVA, the university's digital repository.
