Prof. Martin Grötschel is a renowned mathematician and former Mathematics Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin (1992-2015). He served as President of the Zuse Institute Berlin (ZIB) from 2012 to 2015 and led the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BBAW) from 2015 to 2020. His academic career includes roles as Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Augsburg and Director of its Mathematical Institute.
Research focuses on optimization, discrete mathematics, and operations research with applications in telecommunications, transportation, and industrial systems. Notable collaborations include work with Siemens, Infineon, and T-Systems Nova on real-world optimization challenges.
Recipient of over 30 prestigious awards, including the Leibniz Prize (1995), John von Neumann Theory Prize (2006), and Cantor Medal (2021). He pioneered the 'Matheon' DFG Research Center for Mathematics in Key Technologies and chaired its executive committee until 2008.
Leadership roles span global organizations like the International Mathematical Union (IMU Secretary 2007–2014), Mathematical Optimization Society, and SIAM. His legacy includes advancing mathematical software, online optimization, and interdisciplinary research initiatives like the CO@W workshop series.
