Martin Greimel

Martin Greimel is Head of the Centre for Bioeconomy at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU), a position he has held since 2019. With a background in agricultural engineering and economics, he has extensive experience in EU research and innovation programs, having served as a National Expert at the European Commission from 2004-2006 and coordinating forest-related research for the Austrian Ministry responsible for Forestry from 2006-2019.

Dr. Greimel's primary research interests focus on the bioeconomy concept, its implementation, and its role in addressing climate change and sustainability challenges. His work spans bioeconomy policy frameworks, sustainable resource management, circular economy models, and transformation pathways for economic systems. He has been instrumental in developing Austria's bioeconomy strategy and promoting international collaboration through initiatives like the European Bioeconomy University Alliance.

His publication record shows a clear evolution from early work in agricultural economics and dairy farming (1990s-2000s) to contemporary focus on bioeconomy systems and climate solutions. Recent publications demonstrate his leadership in defining the bioeconomy concept, analyzing its transformation potential, and developing practical implementation strategies across multiple sectors.

As an active contributor to scientific discourse, Greimel has participated in numerous EU-funded research projects including DESTINY (2024-2027), Bioeconomy Austria (2022-2024), and the European Bioeconomy Scientific Forum (2023). He serves in advisory roles including as Deputy Chair of the Task Force Austrian Circular- and Bioeconomy and as a member of the Austrian advisory group for Horizon Europe.

His community engagement extends to public outreach through media appearances and presentations, with over 13 lectures delivered in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Vietnam, focusing on making bioeconomy concepts accessible to diverse audiences including policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the general public.
