Martin Gerzabek is a full professor of Environmental Toxicology and Isotopic Methods at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU). He has held multiple leadership roles, including Rector since 2010, Vice-Rector for Research (2003-2010), and Acting Rector (2009-2010). He studied agriculture at BOKU, graduating in 1985, earned a PhD in Plant Nutrition (1987), and obtained habilitation in Soil Science (1993).
Research Interests: Gerzabek focuses on soil science, radioecology, and isotopic methods, particularly the behavior of heavy metals, radionuclides, and organic pollutants in soil-groundwater-plant systems. His work includes adsorption/desorption studies, lysimetry, and molecular modeling of pollutant interactions.
Publication Trends: His recent research (2004-2014) spans carbon dynamics in alpine ecosystems, humic acid interactions, graphene nanoribbon toxicity, and lignin decomposition under climate change. Key disciplines include biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, and soil microbiology.
Scientific Awards:
- Decoration of Honour for Radiation Protection (2004)
- Emil-Ramann Medal (2011)
- Doctor Honoris Causa (multiple institutions, 2011-2012)
- Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to Austria (2015)
