Martin Evans is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR) at Coventry University. Previously, he served as a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader in International Development Studies at the University of Chester (2009–2020). He holds a PhD in Human Geography from King’s College London, an MA in Environment and Development from SOAS, University of London, and a BSc in Botany from the University of Bristol. He also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.
Evans’ research focuses on the intersection of natural resource management, rural livelihoods, and conflict in West Africa, particularly in Casamance, Senegal. His work examines post-conflict reconstruction, displacement, and returnee communities, as well as illicit timber trafficking and its destabilizing effects. He advocates interdisciplinary approaches to address climate change, food security, and sustainable development, emphasizing local perspectives in fragile environments.
Professional roles include editorial leadership as Editor for geography papers in the Canadian Journal of African Studies (2015–2023) and membership on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of African Studies. He has advised organizations like the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Chatham House, and NGOs in West Africa.
His research spans decades, analyzing the Casamance conflict’s socio-economic dimensions, including the role of agriculture, aid distribution, and cross-border dynamics. Current projects explore paddy rice cultivation and agroecological resilience in the region.
