معرفی
Martin Englund is Professor of Orthopaedics at Lund University, Sweden, and serves as consultant supervisor and project manager of the Lund OsteoArthritis Division. He is also a member of the EpiHealth: Epidemiology for Health and LU Profile Area: Proactive Ageing initiatives.
Research Interests
Prof. Englund’s research group targets musculoskeletal diseases—particularly osteoarthritis—across the entire translational spectrum, from molecules to populations. Using tissue biobanking, advanced MRI, proteomics and nationwide health registers, the team investigates:
- Etiology, natural history and prediction of knee osteoarthritis
- Meniscal and ACL injuries as drivers of OA
- Structural imaging biomarkers and health-economics of OA care
- Multidisciplinary prevention strategies aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals
Recent Publication Trends
Between 2024 and 2025, his 15 most recent articles reveal an intensified focus on early knee OA classification, imaging biomarkers (T2, QSM, micro-CT), long-term outcomes after ACL and meniscal injury, the cost-effectiveness of surgery versus exercise therapy, and the molecular microenvironment of cartilage and meniscus tissue. These works combine advanced imaging, large-scale longitudinal cohorts and interventional trials to redefine early diagnosis and preventive treatment paradigms.
Awards & Recognition
- International Élise Jourdevant Prize, Osteoarthritis Foundation (2018)
- Young Investigator Award (2012)
- Clinical Investigator Award (2011)
Research Leadership & Grants
He currently leads 15 active projects with total funding from Swedish Research Council, ALF, Alfred Österlund Foundation, Swedish Rheumatology Association and CIF. Major programmes include:
- EpiMusc2 (2025-2045): population registers for musculoskeletal disease epidemiology
- Spontaneous healing after ACL injury (2025-2026): sports medicine research funded by CIF
- Artros: Molekyl, struktur, patient och samhälle (2023-2026): translational OA research
Infrastructure & Team
As manager of the Lund OsteoArthritis Division he oversees biobanking facilities, high-field MRI protocols and multidisciplinary research staff. The division hosts doctoral students, post-docs and international collaborators in orthopaedics, radiology, molecular biology and health economics.
