Martin C. Gregory

Martin C. Gregory, DPhil, MBChB is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah School of Medicine, specializing in the Department of Internal Medicine's Nephrology & Hypertension division. His clinical expertise encompasses general nephrology and hereditary renal diseases, with particular focus on Alport Syndrome and related collagen disorders.

Dr. Gregory received his BM, BCh and DPhil Degrees (MD, PhD equivalents) from Oxford University. His medical training continued with residency at the University of London and Oxford University, followed by fellowship in nephrology at Oxford University. He also received additional nephrology training at the University of Paris (VI) and training from the University of Otago in New Zealand. Dr. Gregory is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Gregory's research has primarily focused on hereditary renal diseases, particularly Alport Syndrome. His work spans genetic aspects of the disease, clinical manifestations across different organ systems (including renal, ocular, and auditory), diagnostic approaches, and management strategies. He has made significant contributions to understanding genotype-phenotype correlations in X-linked Alport Syndrome and has been instrumental in developing clinical guidelines for genetic testing and management of this condition.

His publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on Alport Syndrome over several decades, with recent work addressing molecular diagnostics, genetic modifiers, and ocular manifestations of the disease. Dr. Gregory has also contributed to broader nephrology topics including dialysis accessibility in developing countries and thin basement membrane nephropathy.

Dr. Gregory has held significant leadership positions including Chief of Nephrology at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, and Director of Dialysis Services at the Bermuda Hospitals Board. He currently serves on the Medical Advisory Boards of both the Alport Syndrome Foundation and the National Kidney Foundation of Utah and Idaho, demonstrating his commitment to patient advocacy and clinical guidance in his specialty areas.
