Martin Brinkworth is an Associate Professor at the School of Chemistry & Biosciences within the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Bradford. His research focuses on genetic damage in the male germ-line and its consequences for fertility and offspring health.
Dr. Brinkworth received his first degree in Zoology from the University of Bristol (1982) and completed his PhD in male reproductive toxicology (1988). His career includes significant research positions at BIBRA (Carshalton, 1982-1992), the National Cancer Center Research Institute in Tokyo (1989), and the Institute of Reproductive Medicine at the University of Münster, Germany (1992-1999).
His research interests center on the mechanisms and consequences of genetic damage in sperm cells. Key areas include male germ-cell apoptosis, sperm histone packaging, RNA in sperm, and the development of in vitro tests for male reproductive toxicity. His most significant recent discovery involves a specific adhesion molecule that serves as a universal marker for spermatogenic damage, with potential applications in infertility diagnostics and treatment.
Dr. Brinkworth's work has demonstrated how exposure of primordial germ cells to genotoxins affects sperm quality and how men with idiopathic male infertility show various types of genetic damage in their sperm. His research has important implications for understanding the transmission of genetic mutations to offspring and potential evolutionary consequences.
