Martin Berggren is a Professor at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science, Lund University, and serves as a Principal Investigator for the BECC: Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate initiative. His research focuses on dissolved organic carbon (DOC) cycling in boreal freshwaters, examining processes from soil-water interactions to coastal biogeochemistry in the Baltic Sea.
- Key research areas: Aquatic biogeochemistry, climate change impacts, nutrient turnover in lakes/estuaries, DOM photoreactivity, and hypoxia mitigation.
- Projects: Leading studies on DOC decay mechanisms, Baltic Sea hypoxia, and freshwater respiration's role in the carbon cycle.
Scientific contributions include a 2013 Prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf’s foundation. He manages advanced infrastructure like the Horiba Aqualog analyzer and in vitro respiration facilities, while actively peer-reviewing for journals and advising national research panels.
