Prof. Martin Becker holds a Professorship in Social Work Methodologies and City/Community Development at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences Freiburg since 2007. His academic career includes prior roles at SRH University Heidelberg and freelance consulting across various municipalities.
He holds a PhD in Sociology from University of Freiburg (2003), following studies in Social Pedagogy (1980-1985) and a Bachelor's in Sociology, Psychology & Pedagogy (2002). His professional trajectory includes youth care administration, social work consultancy, and over 30 years of supervisory/coaching experience (DGSv certified).
Research focuses on urban social development, neighborhood identity, cross-border cooperation, and resource-oriented social work. His recent projects include the EU-funded MARGE initiative (2017-2019) and studies on local identification in Freiburg (2019-2020). He also explores aging in place, intergenerational programs, and participatory governance models.
Key collaborations include trinational partnerships with Strasbourg's ESTES and Basel's FHNW, as well as municipal bodies in Freiburg, Offenburg, and Kehl. His work bridges academic research with practical policy implementation through 50+ projects since 1999.
Teaching emphasizes methodological rigor in social work practice and community development strategies. He has developed curricula addressing German-French policy comparisons and social security systems analysis through binational workshops.
