Jacob H. Becker is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Oakland University, located in Rochester, Michigan. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Pennsylvania State University (2014), with additional degrees in Crime, Law, Justice, Public Policy, and Sociology. His research focuses on communities and crime, quantitative analysis, urban sociology, and GIS-based crime mapping. He actively contributes to the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Communities and Place and is a dedicated member of Oakland University’s AAUP chapter.
Becker’s research explores how neighborhood structural conditions—such as economic disadvantage and residential stability—affect crime rates, particularly in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, and Detroit. He has expanded into pedagogical research, investigating student anxiety in social statistics courses and developing innovative teaching tools like the wage gap simulation 'Intersectionopoly.'
He teaches core Criminal Justice courses, including 'Geography of Crime' and revised 'Criminology and Public Policy.' His work bridges urban sociology with criminology, emphasizing quantitative methods and spatial analysis. Though no specific awards are listed, his publications reflect sustained scholarly engagement in criminology and education.
