Martijn Blikmans-Middel is a researcher in the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Groningen, under the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. He holds a PhD (dr.) in Social Psychology, supervised by Prof. Martijn van Zomeren. His research focuses on emotions in political communication, media influence on far-right attitudes, moral rhetoric, and refugee attitudes. He has presented work at international conferences and authored/co-authored peer-reviewed articles. His doctoral thesis, Do we live in the age of emotion politics?, examines the effects of emotional appeals (anger, disgust, hope, nostalgia) on political support and polarization. He received the Faculty PhD Fund award and contributed to datasets exploring political psychology.
Research collaborations include international scholars examining topics like far-right movements in Western societies and normative beliefs. His work bridges social intuitionism and political behavior, addressing contemporary issues such as moral persuasion and media exposure impacts.
