Martial Haeffelin is a Senior Research Scientist at École Polytechnique with 25 years of experience in atmospheric remote sensing. He developed a world-class atmospheric observatory at the institution and currently serves as Deputy Director of the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL), overseeing Earth Observations. He also acts as scientific director of ACTRIS-FR, a French national research infrastructure dedicated to climate research.
His research focuses on cloud physical processes, atmospheric radiation budgets, and solar resource impacts on photovoltaic energy systems. Key contributions include pioneering surface-based atmospheric observation methodologies and analyzing cloud-radiation interactions for climate modeling. His work bridges fundamental atmospheric science with practical renewable energy applications through long-term observational datasets.
Dr. Haeffelin initiated and directed CNRS-IPSL's atmospheric observation program for 15 years, establishing École Polytechnique's observatory as a global reference site. Through ACTRIS-FR leadership, he coordinates national infrastructure for aerosol, cloud, and trace gas monitoring, enabling critical climate research across France.
