Martha J. Farah is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor of Natural Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania and directs the Center for Neuroscience & Society. She previously taught at Carnegie-Mellon University, focusing on neuroethics and socioeconomic deprivation's impact on brain development. Her work spans behavioral, neuroendocrine, and neuroimaging methods.
She holds an S.B. in Philosophy and Metallurgy from MIT (1977) and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Harvard (1983). Her research interests include:
- Neuroethics (neuroscience and society)
- Cognitive Neuroscience of socioeconomic status
- Prefrontal cortex development in deprived environments
- Policy implications of neuroscience
Her recent publications explore socioeconomic disparities in brain development, neurotechnology ethics, and cognitive enhancement. Awards include the Troland Research Award, APS Lifetime Achievement Award, and fellowships at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and Guggenheim Foundation.
