Martha Balaguera Cuervo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto (Faculty of Arts & Science). Her research focuses on collective political struggles in violent contexts, particularly transborder activism in the Americas through a feminist lens. She examines migrations, social movements, and carceral regimes across Central America, Mexico, and the U.S., with a focus on LGBTQ+ asylum seekers and grassroots responses to border enforcement. She co-leads Colectiva Protesta, an international feminist collaboration studying Latin American activism.
Her current project analyzes how legal accompaniment networks and refugees contest U.S.-Mexico border detention-deportation systems. Recent publications include analysis of trans-migrations and sovereignty in Journal of Women in Culture and Society (2018), and border lawfare critiques in a 2020 review series. She teaches POL390H5F and engages in public scholarship through op-eds in NACLA and Border Criminologies.
