Marten Lutz is a Professor of General and African Linguistics at SOAS University of London, UK. He holds a PhD in Linguistics from SOAS (1999) and additional qualifications in education and philosophy. His academic leadership roles include Head of the SOAS Doctoral School (2020–2023), Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Cultures (2015–2018), and Director of the London Confucius Institute (2015–2019).
Research focuses on Bantu languages, comparative linguistics, and morphosyntactic variation in African languages. Fieldwork spans Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zambia. He has received grants from Leverhulme, BA/Leverhulme, and the UK-Africa Academic Partnership.
