Marta Roca i Escoda is an Associate Professor of Gender Studies at the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) within the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Lausanne, effective August 1, 2024. She has been a core faculty member since 2012 and pioneered gender studies development through the Interfaculty Platform for Gender Studies (PLAGE), serving as its inaugural co-president.
Her academic foundation includes a 2006 PhD in Sociology from the University of Geneva, where her thesis analyzed Switzerland's first same-sex couples law. Subsequent research at Université libre de Bruxelles and Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona examined European LGBTQ+ movements and legal mobilization strategies.
Professor Roca i Escoda's work critically investigates family law regulations through sexuality epistemology, with specialized projects on minority kinship pathways, medically assisted procreation's impact on filiation systems, and intra-family violence. Her scholarship bridges legal anthropology, gender justice, and research ethics, notably authoring a seminal reference work on sociological research ethics.
She actively shapes academic governance as member of the Faculty's Research Ethics Committee (CER-SSP), UNIL Ethics Committee (CER-UNIL), and Interdisciplinary Center for Research in Ethics (CIRE). Her leadership extends internationally through eight years on the International Association of French-Speaking Sociologists (AISLF) board and editorship of SociologieS journal (2018-2024). She currently directs a Certificate of Advanced Studies program in Gender Studies focused on global professional equality practices.
