Marta Mulawa, PhD, MHS, is an Assistant Professor at Duke University School of Nursing with a secondary appointment as Assistant Research Professor at the Duke Global Health Institute. She holds a BA in Community Health and Child Development from Tufts University (2006), an MHS in International Health from Johns Hopkins University (2008), and a PhD in Health Behavior from UNC Chapel Hill (2016). She completed postdoctoral training in Duke's NIH-funded Interdisciplinary Research Training Program in AIDS.
Her research examines social and behavioral determinants of HIV treatment and prevention outcomes, with emphasis on:
- Digital health interventions for HIV adherence
- Social network influences on health behaviors
- Violence prevention in global contexts
- mHealth solutions for adolescents in South Africa and Tanzania
- Stigma reduction in US HIV prevention
Her recent publications (2023-2025) focus on HIV care innovations, mental health equity interventions, and anti-racist approaches in public health, employing methodologies ranging from systematic reviews to randomized controlled trials across global settings.

She leads a K01-funded project developing smartphone-based ART adherence interventions in South Africa and co-investigates an NIH R01 evaluating online stigma-reduction programs. Her mentoring focuses on fostering research independence and methodological rigor in global health trainees.
