Marta Marmiroli is an Associate Professor in Plant Biotechnology at the Department of Chemical, Life and Environmental Sustainability Sciences, University of Parma. She has held this position since 2018 after being a Senior Researcher (2005-2018). Her career spans over two decades of research in phytoremediation, nanotoxicology, and environmental biotechnology, including roles as Senior Associated Editor of the International Journal of Phytoremediation since 2009.
- Born in Parma, Italy (1972)
- PhD in Biotechnology (2002), University of Parma
- Master in Physics (1998), University of Parma
Her research interests focus on phytoremediation, trace element dynamics in plants, synchrotron radiation applications, and nanotoxicology. She has led 23 international projects (EU, NATO, OECD, etc.) including PRIN, Horizon 2020, and CARIPLO Trust initiatives.
The article trends demonstrate her expertise in: (1) Synchrotron-based metal speciation in plants (2001-2019), (2) Biochar applications for soil remediation (2014-2025), (3) Nanoparticle interactions with model organisms (2011-2018), and (4) Arsenic mitigation in rice (2024). Her work bridges biotechnology, environmental science, and agricultural sustainability.
- Scientific Awards
- Steven Ebbs Prize (2018), International Phytotechnology Society
Advising includes: (1) Davide Imperiale (2008-2010) on poplar metal exposure, (2) Veronica Pigoni & Luca Pagano (2011-2013) on arsenic/nanoparticle biotechnology, and (3) Valentina Gallo (2015-2017) on nanoparticle proteomics. She has tutored ~10 PhD theses with collaborations in Italy, NZ, and USA.
