Marta Brunelli is an Associate Professor of General and Social Pedagogy at the Department of Education, Cultural Heritage and Tourism Sciences of the University of Macerata. She obtained the National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor in 2021 (valid until 2032) and serves as Deputy Director of the "Paolo & Ornella Ricca" School Museum. Her academic career includes editorial leadership as Editor-in-Chief of the international journal "History of Education & Children's Literature" since 2006 and membership on the Steering Committee of the Documentation and Research Center on the History of School Books and Children's Literature (Ce.Sco.) since 2009.
Her research focuses on using cultural heritage as an educational resource through designing interpretive communication and implementing educational products and participatory projects for children and families. These initiatives aim to meet social needs, promote cultural and tourism value of local areas, and enhance community identity. A specific research line examines historical and scholastic heritage and its application for educational innovation in compulsory and university education. She has been instrumental in developing cataloging standards for school heritage through her work with the ICCD as scientific advisor for the Marche Region.
Professor Brunelli has led significant projects including the redesign and expansion of the School Museum (2021-2022), overseeing new exhibition layouts and visitor routes. Her scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with material culture of education, public history, and innovative museum pedagogy, with particular attention to educational objects, school heritage documentation, and the intersection of historical research with contemporary educational practices. Her publications demonstrate methodological innovation in studying school material culture through commercial catalogs and historical educational supplies.
She has received competitive national grants, including the MIUR project "Repurposing and Redevelopment of the Spaces and Routes of the 'Paolo and Ornella Ricca' School Museum" in 2016. Professor Brunelli actively participates in international collaborations through Erasmus+ projects and has served as visiting professor at institutions including the University of Leipzig (February 2025), Ionian University of Corfu (May 2024), and Universidad Complutense of Madrid (February 2019), demonstrating her significant international presence in the field of educational history.
Her leadership extends to professional organizations, where she contributes to the Commission for the Cataloguing of School Heritage established by SIPSE. She has played a key role in testing new cataloging standards created by the ICCD, shaping methodological approaches to educational heritage documentation. Her work consistently bridges academic research with practical applications in museum education and cultural heritage management, exemplifying the university's third mission of societal engagement through museum-based educational programs and community projects.
